"How can I tell if my dog has a weight problem?"

Your veterinarian can tell you what the "ideal" weight is for your dog, based on breed, age, gender and build.

That weight will be used as the reference point to determine if your dog is "overweight" or "obese."

Simply stated...

"Overweight" = 5% to 19% above the ideal weight

"Obese" = 20% or more above the ideal weight

Simple ways to check if your dog is overweight or obese

Try the "Rib Test"

  • With your dog in a standing position, place your hands on his rib cage and gently feel his ribs. Are they "well padded"? Is it hard to even feel them? If so, your dog may have a weight problem.

Watch for other telltale signs

  • Fat on the lower back and base of tail
  • No "waist" when viewed from above
  • Less stamina
  • Decreased interest in physical activities
  • Difficulty jumping up on furniture or climbing stairs
